Donna Nicely to receive 2012 Hoy Stephenson Lifetime Achievement Award

Photo of Donna NicelyThe Awards Luncheon, a traditional feature of our Annual Symposium, to be held this year on Dec. 13, affords us an opportunity to honor our annual award recipients.

Receiving the Hoy Stephenson Lifetime Achievement Award this year will be Donna Nicely. Ms. Nicely served as Director of the Nashville Public Library from 1995 until her retirement in 2011. Prior to that, she was Director of the DeKalb Public Library in Decatur, GA. She continues to be involved in leadership positions in our community, including service on the boards of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and the Country Music Foundation. Ms. Nicely served on the Urban Libraries Council Executive Board, and was Chair from 2004-2005.

In 2008-2009, she was a member of the Knight Commission on the Information Needs of Communities in a Democracy, a 15-member commission assembled to recommend both public and private measures to help American communities better meet their information needs.

In July 2009, Ms. Nicely was presented the Public Library Association’s Charlie Robinson Award for a public library director who has been an innovator, risk-taker and change agent in libraries; in the same month, she was recognized by resolution of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County City Council for her accomplishments. In August 2009, Ms. Nicely was named to the “Academy for Women of Achievement” for 2009 by the YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

Ms. Nicely holds a BA from Boston University and MAT and MLS degrees from Emory University.

The Hoy Stephenson Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to retired Tennessee administrators who, during their lifetimes, have made contributions of profound impact to public administration. Through their public service careers, these individuals have improved our society and inspired others.
